Generic anatomy: source and fidelity
Research atlas 0.4 / 2 November 2026
Data provenance
BodyParts3D / Anatomography, © The Database Center for Life Science (DBCLS), source version 4.3. Source component membership is selected from the official version-stamped FMA2Obj manifest. Source labels and FMA concepts are retained. One generic male reference anatomy is represented; there is no patient-specific reconstruction or population of anatomical variants.

What is represented
| Workspace | Source structures | Resolved anatomy and principal limits |
|---|---|---|
| Heart | 60 | Atrial and ventricular walls, ventricular chamber spaces, aortic/pulmonary cusps, mitral/tricuspid leaflets, papillary muscles, supplied coronary branches, great-vessel and region-cropped nerve context. The ventricular wall includes a septal region but does not provide a separately selectable interventricular septum. Chordae, conduction system, full cardiac nerve plexus, epicardial fat, pericardial layers and capillary detail are not separately resolved. |
| Brain | 120 | Source cortical/deep regions, ventricular spaces, selected neural structures and vascular branches. No diffusion tractography, functional mapping, tumor, aneurysm, microscopic pathways or complete neurovascular tree. |
| Lungs | 135 | Source parenchymal regions, bronchial trees, pulmonary vessels and cropped nerve context. No alveolar/capillary network, tumor, margin, ventilation or pleural mechanics. |
| Liver | 60 | Source hepatic segments, supplied portal/arterial/venous branches, gallbladder and biliary pathways. Source segment naming is not a clinically verified Couinaud assignment. No tumor, margins, perfusion, bile-flow or deformation mechanics. |
| Kidneys | 23 | Kidneys, supplied renal vascular branches, ureters and bladder. Cortex, medulla, pyramids, collecting-system microanatomy and nephrons are not separately resolved. No tumor, margins, filtration or tissue mechanics. |
Geometry preparation
984 source mesh components are grouped into 398 selectable FMA concepts across the five workspaces; some context components are shared between workspaces. OBJ polygons are triangulated and stored as indexed geometry. Source positions are not individually moved, smoothed, inflated, decimated or replaced with generated anatomy. Long context nerves and vessels can be region-cropped by triangle centroid, with a flag in the model manifest. The viewer applies a common rigid rotation and centering translation to the entire model. Native source units are declared as millimetres in the OBJ headers and have not been independently calibrated.
Every manifest records original component IDs, representation IDs, source file SHA-256, derived asset hashes, geometry counts, source bounds and changes. The release loader verifies exact asset lengths and SHA-256 before geometry is displayed.
Rendering and interaction
The viewer supports 360-degree orbit, pan, zoom, anatomical camera presets, selection, focus, isolation, per-structure transparency, reversible visibility stages and one movable clipping plane. Hidden structures retain their original spatial transforms. Clipping is uncapped: an exposed cut edge is not a measured tissue section or a reconstruction of missing internals. Zoom magnifies existing source detail rather than creating microscopic resolution.
Tissue mode applies approximate biological colors, physically based materials, procedural surface variation and environment lighting. These are illustrative materials, not photographed tissue or measured material properties. No actual softness, elasticity, force feedback or physical response is simulated. Atlas colors intentionally use false colors; for example, blue veins are a semantic convention. There is no cardiac motion or valve-motion model.
Procedure contexts
Ten anatomy walkthroughs cover coronary bypass and valve replacement relationships, brain tumor/aneurysm relationships, lobectomy/resection relationships, liver resection/gallbladder relationships, and nephrectomy/renal mass relationships. They display normal source anatomy and make missing pathology explicit. There are no tumors, aneurysms, grafts, prostheses, bleeding, instrument interactions, tissue division, suturing, surgical access recommendations or operative guidance.
Evidence required for the requested simulation standard
A clinically reviewed asset set must resolve the missing structures and variants. Photographic or histologically validated tissue materials require appropriate source rights and review. Procedure simulation additionally needs validated deformation, contact, cutting, constraints, perfusion/bleeding and device models, plus suitable haptics where intended. Independent anatomical assessment, representative user evaluation, performance coverage and jurisdiction-specific clinical/regulatory review remain open.
